Dr John Patrick Hickey
Brief Background
Patrick Hickey graduated in medicine from London University in 1968 having attended St Mary’s Hospital Medical School. He worked at the usual house jobs and continued on to the level of registrar in Hospital Medicine, passing a number of post graduate exams on the way including his MRCP. The GMC placed him on specialist register and Patrick felt that he might well have a successful career in the UK and go on to become a consultant.
At interview for a career post at his alma mater Patrick was told he should “go home to Ireland”. Patrick is however a Cornishman whose father was a doctor from Cork, who served with the RAF during WW2. Patrick’s father married into a Cornish family and settled in Cornwall establishing himself as a well thought of GP in Newquay.
Patrick realised from his experience at interview that there was little future for him in the UK and then moved his wife and young family to Canada taking up hospital practise there. His intention was to stay in the North Americas but sadly his father had a stroke and Patrick returned to Newquay to help his father in the practice. He became a partner and when his father retired Patrick had a vision of a new and better way of practise and began to combine holistic medicine with more conventional medicine. Eventually he set up his own Holistic Practise in Newquay.
